RoundTable – Conference Learnings
Hosted by Prof Grant Phelps, RWAV Board Chair.
Reflecting on the discussions at the RWAV Conference, delegates were prompted to explore and examine the barriers, enablers, and opportunities.
This session clarified the common understanding of the challenges and hope for the future of rural healthcare among the conference delegates.

I’m pessimistic about…
- Collaboration between public and private sectors
- The focus has shifted away from recruiting GPs
- Equity of access – is there enough money?
- Getting a systematic complete data set for the workforce
- Not looking at holistic solutions
- Governments not brave enough to make reforms
- The lure of the big city!Â
I’m optimistic about…
- Innovative public/private solutions
- Students and future workforce
- Pool of high-quality student in rural locations
- The passion of those working at the coal face in healthcare
- Focus on regionalisation and population planning
- All GP training places filled this year – RACGP and ACRRM
- Flexibility of supervision model for AHAs
- Conferences like this that brings everyone together to explore solutions and innovation
- Improvements in technology and uptake and applicability of AI
- Ongoing advocacy work for rural areas
- Support for working and living in rural areas, improving cultural competencyâŻ
- Opportunity to make choices about the health system we wantÂ
