In the last edition, we told readers about the content of the cultural respect and appreciation workshop that took place in Wondonga. After that workshop, five others took place in Colac, Mildura, Morwell, Mullum Mullum and Mungabareena in the period from July to April 2018.
The need to heighten awareness levels about the cultural needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities was a theme that participants took from the workshops. Overall, the workshops were a positive step toward more inclusive practices, and the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values: the importance of family and identity being one of these.
Thank you to AJ Williams-Tchen who provided the training. It is a contractual requirement that all outreach service providers attend one of the cultural respect and appreciation workshops. To accommodate new providers, RWAV will be providing six workshops in 2018 to 2019, commencing in September across the state. Look for posts on the upcoming workshops in the new financial year.
