Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Patrick Campisi, a locum GP who works for RWAV and is currently residing in Robinvale, a beautiful town located an hour away from Mildura in the Murray River Bay region of north-west Victoria. During our conversation, Dr. Campisi shared his background and career journey, as well as his experiences working in Indigenous health and locum work.
Growing up in Leongatha and Dandenong, Dr. Campisi started his career as a GP and worked at university health services in Melbourne for over 30 years, including a brief stint in New Zealand during the COVID pandemic. In New Zealand, he experienced a different healthcare system and learned about funding differences, particularly in addressing unique health issues faced by the islander and Maori populations. His experience has led him to work in Indigenous health through RWAV.
Dr. Campisi remains committed to his work and appreciates the warmth and welcoming nature of the people he serves, particularly in places where there may be no doctor at all or where the doctor is exhausted and needs a break. For Dr. Campisi, the opportunity to travel and explore different towns in Victoria, and learn about their history and what they are famous for, is one of the rewarding aspects of his locum work.
One place that stands out to him is Heywood, which he looks forward to every Tuesday and Thursday, enjoying the morning tea and scones that the hospital kitchen makes. Interestingly, he discovered that an old colleague had started the tradition of scones at Heywood, and that it was still going strong after 25 years.
For those considering locum work, Dr. Campisi advises buying a bicycle and taking advantage of the community and local resources. He also recommends making use of educational resources and learning about each unique place visited, giving back to the community, and enjoying the adventure.
Overall, it was a pleasure to speak with Dr. Patrick Campisi and hear about his experiences in locum work and rural health settings. We thank him for his time and look forward to hearing more about his future rural adventures.
