MORE DOCTORS FOR RURAL AUSTRALIA PROGRAM (MDRAP) – update as of 4 April 2024
In the 2023-24 Budget, the Australian Government decided to replace the More Doctors for Rural Australia Program (MDRAP) with the Pre-Fellowship Program (PFP). The MDRAP is now officially closed and is no longer open to new applications.
Doctors who are currently participating on the MDRAP are not required to apply for the new PFP.
Here are some key points to note:
For Doctors:
- Continued Financial Support – doctors will continue to receive financial support towards Learning and Development until 30 September 2024.
- Access to Medicare Provider Number – doctors access their MDRAP Medicare Provider number for the remainder of their two-year time limit.
- MDRAP Objectives – it is imperative that a doctor ensure that they meet the program’s primary objective and obtain a placement on a college pathway as no extension will be provided past their individual expiry date.
- Ineligibility for PFP– Doctors who have participated in the MDRAP are not eligible to apply for the PFP.
For Practices/Clinics:
- Continued Financial Support – practices supporting MDRAP doctors will continue to receive financial support towards supervision (if eligible) until 30 September 2024.
- Access to Medicare Provider Number – Doctors who are currently on the MDRAP will be able to remain on the program past 30 September 2024 and access their MDRAP Medicare Provider number for the remainder of their two-year time limit.
- Ineligibility for PFP – Doctors who have participated in the MDRAP are not eligible to apply for the PFP.
The MDRAP is a Commonwealth Government funded program that is part of the Government’s Stronger Rural Health Strategy. The MDRAP Guidelines are issued by the Department of Health MDRAP Guidelines.
This program permits a doctor to have access to Medicare rebates and to participate in an approved workforce program. RWAV is the delegated authority in Victoria to administer the MDRAP on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Health. This means RWAV acts on behalf of the Department of Health to issue the MDRAP.
