The Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) welcomes the release of the Robyn Kruk AO Independent Review of Health Practitioner Regulatory Settings final report
MELBOURNE, VIC, 19 December 2023 — The Kruk review has examined the regulations that enable overseas health professionals to work in Australia.
This important report provides recommendations for the government, regulators, medical colleges and Ministers to streamline inefficient processes that are preventing overseas health professionals from readily supporting urgent health workforce shortages which are extreme in rural Australia.
“Rural Victoria significantly relies on overseas health professionals, who are vital for patients to access healthcare. These health professionals continue to make a positive contribution to healthcare, and more needs to be done to enable them to work safely in Victoria in a timely fashion” said RWAV CEO Lauren Cordwell.
“RWAV has been supporting overseas health professionals to work in rural Victoria for two decades. We have observed how long delays, documentation duplication, expensive and rigid application pathways as detailed in the report, have challenged many of these skilled professionals.
RWAV is pleased to see the report has made recommendations to improve experiences for applicants and consider ways to expand fast-track pathways for medical specialists and allied health professions in areas of workforce shortage, without compromising safety and quality of health care to communities.
RWAV will continue to monitor implementation of the recommendations that may impact rural Victoria, including considerations to expand remote supervision models for health care professionals. We look forward to seeing details of plans to explore collaborative models to support overseas health professional recruitment and retention in rural Australia.
We believe these recommendations could enable local communities to receive better access to healthcare in rural Victoria.
RWAV looks forward to working with governments and regulators to remove inefficiencies and duplicative processes, and improve the experiences and opportunities for overseas health professionals to work in country Victoria.”
